Mr. Monett Photography One 28 November 2018 Human Trafficking Human trafficking is an issue in society that is commonly known but not changed. Many people believe that it will never happen to them, so they don’t need to worry. However, there were forty-five cases reported in Minnesota in 2018 alone, and that leaves out many cases that were never reported. Human trafficking denies humans of rights that they obtained at birth. Human rights are not optional; humans are not for sale. Human trafficking is a form of modern slavery- a multi-billion dollar criminal industry that denies freedom to 24.9 million people around the world. It is the act of forcing one to complete an action against their will using violence, threats, and other manipulative tactics. The US Labor Organization estimates that there are 40.3 million victims impacted by human trafficking globally. It can be identified by signs such as: anxiety, little pay, works unusual hours, lacks medical care, and many others.Unfortunately, these signs are often ignored and can represent many other situations. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, “Every two minutes a child is trafficked for the purpose of sexual exploitation in the United States.” When put into comparison of one’s daily life, a child is trafficked whenever someone brushes their teeth, takes out their trash, sends a text, or completes a simple daily task. Although it is very difficult to stop human trafficking, society has the power to raise awareness in order to give people the knowledge to recognize red flags as well as teaching new generations how to protect themselves. The best way to help make a difference is to use the power of knowledge.
